Institutional Overview & Campus Profile

Founded in 1787 on the American frontier as the Pittsburgh Academy, the University of Pittsburgh has evolved into a global powerhouse in medicine, computer science, bioengineering, and philosophy of science. Enrolling more than 34,000 students on its urban campus anchored by the iconic 42-story Cathedral of Learning, Pitt is closely partnered with the USD $24 billion UPMC healthcare system. Pitt scientists developed the world’s first licensed polio vaccine, pioneered modern multivisceral organ transplantation under Thomas Starzl, and are currently creating brain-computer interfaces allowing paralyzed individuals to control robotic limbs with direct sensory feedback.
