Academic overview & research priorities

Tracing its origins back to the Sendai Han Medical School founded in 1817, Tohoku University School of Medicine on the Seiryo Campus is world-renowned for translating frontier biological discoveries into clinical treatments. Home to the Tohoku Medical Megabank Project (TMM) containing Japan's most comprehensive 150,000-person biobank and whole-genome database, the institution leads global research in oxidative stress biology (Keap1-Nrf2 pathway), neurodevelopment, infectious epidemiology, and cryo-EM structural biology.

Research admissions & international criteria

Admission to the Master of Medical Sciences (English Track) requires a bachelor's degree in biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, or related science, academic transcripts, and TOEFL/IELTS scores. Doctoral programs (PhD in Medical Sciences) require a recognized MD, DDS, DVM, or master's degree, comprehensive research proposal, and supervisor pre-acceptance. MEXT University Recommendation scholarships and Tohoku University International Doctoral Fellowships offer generous stipends.
