Academic overview & research priorities

Formed through the 2003 merger of the historic Tokyo University of Fisheries (est. 1888, Shinagawa campus) and Tokyo University of Mercantile Marine (est. 1875, Etchujima campus), TUMSAT operates a world-leading marine fleet including the training vessel Umitaka Maru. The university is internationally acclaimed for pioneering fish surrogate broodstock germ-cell transplantation, autonomous ship navigation, and marine food cold-chain logistics.

Research admissions & international criteria

Admission to undergraduate degree tracks requires secondary school completion, national entrance examinations, and Japanese language ability (or English proficiency for select international programs). Master's and doctoral programs in Marine Science and Technology require a bachelor's or master's degree in marine science, biology, or engineering, and submission of a research proposal endorsed by a prospective TUMSAT laboratory supervisor.
